What began as a simple writing exercise turned into something much larger.

While teaching English, I challenged my students to write a story based on a creative prompt. To show them what I expected, I sat down to write an example.

Sixty pages later, I realized it was more than an example—it was the beginning of a novel.
I kept writing for the next 19 months. The result: a 180-page story filled with quiet grief, magical symbolism, and unresolved memory.

I put it away for a few years. In 2019, I decided to take it out of the drawer and submit it to publishers. One eventually wrote back, saying they'd like to publish it—and so I did.
